BONDAGE POSITIONS: THE RIGHT WAY TO DO IT

Bondage positions for beginners

Not all bondage is the same. The artful bondage has different intentions and there are countless bondage types as well as very different techniques and bondage positions. Torture bondage, decorative bondage, hogtie, spread eagle and more – we explain the most important bondage positions with pictures.

The most popular bondage positions

Hogtie

Lying on your stomach, tie your wrists and ankles together, hand and ankle joints are also connected. Feel your way slowly and leave the connection between hand & foot rather longer, in order not to risk back damage.

Frogtie

In Frogtie, the legs are tied to the thighs with the ankles, creating a frog position. The wrists, in turn, are fixed to the outside of the leg restraints of the respective side or else behind the back.

Spread Eagle

The bottom is attached lying on its back or stomach, all fours from itself, at four separate points. The finished Spread Eagle looks like a big X from above. BDSM professionals also practice the Spread Eagle while standing on a St. Andrew’s cross.

Strappado

The wrists are tied behind the back and pulled up with a rope. The rope is attached to the ceiling. The feet remain on the floor. This position is only for bondage professionals and should only be done under supervision or in a professional studio. There is a risk of shoulder injuries.

Boxtie

The arms are linked behind the back. The rope is tied around the upper body (above & below the chest) at the back. People with shoulder problems should avoid this position or not stay in the position for a long time.

Bondage types

Tying each other up and thus creating a clear power imbalance between the bondage artist (“rigger”) and the submissive partner (“bunny”) is a popular erotic game. But what do the restraints actually do and what are they used for? Three main groups can be distinguished here:

  • Purpose bondage is simply about creating immobility, it is also called utility bondage. Knowledge of special knotting techniques and special bondage utensils are unnecessary. The goal is to restrain the sub quickly and expediently.
  • Torture bondage, on the other hand, is intended to force the bottom into a position that is as uncomfortable or painful as possible – e.g. as a punishment as part of a chastisement game. By the way, sexual intercourse does not necessarily have to be part of a bondage session, but sex can occur. That’s why the term “bondage sex” is sometimes used.
  • Especially nice to look at – which is also the purpose in this case – is the so-called ornamental bondage. Here, aesthetic considerations are in the foreground. The bondage should primarily look good and only secondarily restrict the bottom. Often ornamental bondage is worn to emphasize certain parts of the body or as a “costume” at fetish parties.

In addition, ornate Japanese bondage (called shibari or kinbaku) should be distinguished from the bondage we are familiar with. This is a bondage art originating from Japan. The aim is to combine the body and the ropes into an aesthetic and harmonious unit. A power imbalance between active and passive part is not always present, so you can also face each other as equal accomplices when being tied up.

Bondage techniques

When it comes to bondage, we distinguish between basic techniques. Besides tying arms and legs together, there is also spreading them apart (e.g. with a spreader bar) and tying them to objects such as bedposts or the back of a chair. Again, caution is advised as joints can be affected.

A popular technique is wraparound bondage. Here, individual body parts or even the entire body are wrapped. Ropes create a great pattern, but cling film is also used for this purpose – but beware: heat buildup under the airtight material can be dangerous. Among other things, real BDSM professionals practice suspension bondage, i.e. hanging up the body. However, this requires detailed knowledge of human anatomy, experience and special devices (hooks in the ceiling, beams, etc.). Don’t try this at home!
